Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)

Oral Surgery & Comfort

About This Service

South Bay Dental Surgery Center offers platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as part of regenerative oral surgery planning when added healing support may be helpful. Dr. Kim's periodontal and implant training includes biologic techniques designed to support grafting, tissue healing, and surgical recovery.

Platelet-rich fibrin, often called PRF, is a regenerative technique that concentrates platelets, fibrin, and growth-factor-rich cells from a patient's own blood. In oral surgery and periodontal care, PRF may be used to support soft-tissue healing, grafting procedures, extraction sites, sinus lift care, implant planning, and other treatment where improved healing support is helpful.

How PRF is used in oral surgery

PRF can be placed as a membrane, plug, or biologic layer during selected surgical procedures. It is commonly discussed with treatments such as tooth extractions, socket preservation, bone grafting, sinus lift procedures, gum grafting, and implant-related care.

A natural healing support

Because PRF is made from your own blood, it does not rely on a synthetic drug or donor blood product. The concentrated fibrin matrix helps hold platelets and growth factors in the area where healing is needed.

Benefits for surgical healing

PRF helps create a concentrated fibrin matrix at the treatment site, supporting clot stability, soft-tissue healing, graft protection, and a more biologically active environment during early recovery.

The Process

1

Treatment Planning

We review the planned procedure and explain whether PRF may help support healing, grafting, or tissue stability.

2

Small Blood Draw

A small blood sample is collected at the visit and processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich fibrin.

3

PRF Preparation

The fibrin is prepared into the form needed for the procedure, such as a membrane or plug.

4

Surgical Placement

PRF is placed directly at the treatment site as part of the surgical or regenerative plan.

Common Questions

If your treatment plan involves an extraction, bone graft, gum graft, sinus lift, or implant-related procedure, our Torrance team can explain whether PRF is appropriate and how it fits into your overall surgical plan.
